Description: The concert features 60 voices singing a rich programme of treasured Ukrainian sacred and folk songs for the Christmas season.
“We are excited to present this concert and we invite everyone to come and experience the touching Ukrainian Christmas songs which have captivated people for generations,” said Scott Armstrong, Olexander Koshetz Choir president. “You can expect some of the Ukrainian Christmas favourites along with a list of extraordinary songs which may be new for some people.”
This year, the Olexander Koshetz Choir is partnering with Tec Voc High School staff and students who will deliver the show in a multi-media theatre setting. The choir has experienced a significant increase in attendance at the Christmas concert over the past few years and the venue at Tec Voc will accommodate an even larger audience.
“Our hope is that all guests will be moved by the colourful setting, the songs and the choir’s dynamic delivery,” said Armstrong. “This will be a vibrant show and even if you don’t understand Ukrainian, you will enjoy the music and atmosphere.”
The Choir is also especially excited to be working with Canadian Opera up and coming star Lida Szkwarek, who will be part of the show. “It’s such a rare treat and positive experience to work with professional singers that value, respect and live their culture – we professionally encountered each other a number of months ago for the first time at a wedding for a friend common to Lida and the choir. The excitement of working with Lida since then has helped drive us forward, no doubt,” emphasized Armstrong.
Tickets to “The Call of the Bells” are on sale now for $20 each and are available in Winnipeg at Oseredok Boutique at 184 Alexander Avenue East; Svitoch Ukrainian Export and Import at 621 Selkirk Avenue; Kalyna Book & Gift Shop at 952 Main Street, or from choir members. All guests are invited to stay for post-concert refreshments.
The Olexander Koshetz Choir of Winnipeg is a unique Ukrainian Canadian cultural institution.
